The elaborate and enigmatic drawings of the Milan based artist Marco Mazzoni are created entirely by coloured pencils. Drawing on Sardinian folklore of an underground matriarchal culture of witches and herbalist healers, his drawings frequently feature a female face surrounded by, (with the eyes always obscured), finely detailed studies of variegated flora and fauna. Combined with an undisputed mastery of chiaroscuro the effect is seductively disturbing with an undercurrent of bewitching danger and riotous decadence.

Wow! I’ve “been away” for much too long, but you never cease to amaze me with what you bring to this site. It’s like sitting in on a university Art class. (Of course, now I have to come back to check out what I’ve missed)
Kudos!

Thank you, I have been pretty sporadic myself in posting, I go on a spree for a while then nothing for weeks or months. Thank you kindly for the compliments, I do try to highlight art that catches my eye and hopefully entertain, educate or enlighten. Something along those lines anyway. Thanks again.

Thank you Christine, I have been quiet lately I do apologise. Working on rewrites and be prone to existential questioning has made me even more quiet than usual. Glad you enjoyed!

I think we all have actually been quiet. It is sort of a scary time, and indeed, I think it brings on existential questioning. Hope you are well, and good luck with your rewrites! 🙂

Thank you Christine I am indeed well (touch wood) and I trust you are too. Rewrites are never fun, too much like hard work but it has to be done I suppose.

Mr Cake, again you haven’t failed introducing me to a new artist and first I thought scary however on looking closely into the pictures I could see what the artist was trying to express to the viewer. Keep safe in these difficult times

Beautiful and strange. I am amazed that this is colored pencil. It has the appearance of watercolor. The way the lightest spaces just glow… ah! Obscuring the eyes adds to the mystery, blurs the identity but one has to wonder… is he just not good at drawing eyes? I am of course, just kidding! Thank you for the introduction to this talented and intriguing artist.

Thank you Lily. I think he also works with watercolours, never oils, but these are all coloured pencils. Quite amazing. I think it was Bonnard who always painted his nudes with shoes on because he couldn’t paint feet… but I am sure that isn’t the case here, more an effect and a comment on nature and humanity. Glad you enjoyed!
